How to live frugally on a single income: Tips for families

They say money makes the world go round, but it also has the power to make the world difficult for so many families. It is hard to save money and easy to spend it when you are on your own.

This is undoubtedly very challenging when you live on a single income.

Here are some frugal living tips for families to make the most of what you earn and making it a habit.

Create a tracking list

In order to get a good view of where your money should go, tracking your spending is necessary, especially when money is tight and you need to save up for that rainy day or even just make it to the next payday. This may help you stick to your budget and avoid overspending.

Cut back on eating out and food delivery/make a weekly meal plan

Dining out or getting takeaways or food delivery is more expensive than cooking at home. Planning your weekly meals is the key to reducing food costs and avoiding food waste. Write down the meals you want to eat for the week and create your grocery list. Remember to only buy the items you need.

Conserve water and electricity

Switch off appliances and faucets when not in use. With the steady inflation going on, being mindful of using water and electricity can save you lots of bucks.

Buy reusable or second-hand items.

Buying disposables such as paper towels, and paper plates means you’ll have to keep buying those items to keep them in stock at home. Instead, replace them with multi-use alternatives such as cloth towels and silverware.

Also, visiting a thrift shop for clothes could make your dollar go further. Not only is it fun, but it gives you the opportunity to find unique items you rarely see in department stores. Just remember to shop smart and only buy what you need.

Save, save, save

Don’t forget to keep a small portion of your hard-earned money and save for emergency use. My mom always reminded me, that it is not what we earn that’s important, but what we save. Having this on my mind, I budgeted my spending.

Out of all these frugal living tips for families, the most important key takeaway is to cut back while prioritizing your family’s needs. There are some sacrifices to make and some things to live without in order to have financial freedom. But there is a reward in doing so.
